When the list of your best friends (which is pretty much drinking buddies once you’re my age) includes two constructions workers, a carpenter, a banker who is a gym instructor and a priest who is into motocross racing, your evening are guaranteed t be studded with exotic conversation and on somedays the ones who’ve had a little more than their usual quota of some honey colored beverage will turn the conversation to something mundane, but yet so common that you rarely thought about it even though it was in front of you.
Frank, the contractor took the lead, worrying about the prefabricated stair job he had to do that next week, said something about having to be the all-in-one as an engineer, architect, carpenter and manager. Joshua, the other contractor chimed in with his appreciation for how easy and safe modern technology had made stair building. Carl, the banker, well in this economy, there’s plenty of worry from those in his line of profession. The priest was late and the carpenter decided to wow us with his discourse espousing the virtue of well designed prefab stair rails and how his work at restoring the local museum’s stair and bolsters was the bomb. I’m a bit of fan of classic architecture as well as wood-work and definitely wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to listen in on this one.
Apparently, the best wood to use when working to construct stairs in areas with such large amounts of traffic is pine. Once treated, it is pretty much as weatherproof as wood can get. Also, for the treads an extra coat of baked enamel does wonders when it comes to handling wet feet inside the premises. What was especially new to me was that they could now coat the railings in the same non-slip material as well. As far as I remember it needed a brush applicator to get that kind of stuff onto curved surfaces!
